Bad Education is a 2019 film directed by Cory Finley and broadcast on HBO in April 2020. It is based on the story of the largest public school embezzlement in American history, which went public in 2004.
The film tells the story of Frank Tassone, the charismatic superintendent of the Roslyn School District, and his relationship with the $11 million deviation from the budget for public education in the United States, while making the district one of the most advanced and prestigious educational areas in the country. It stars Hugh Jackman in the role of Tassone and features performances by Allison Janney, Ray Romano and Geraldine Viswanathan, among others.
The Bad Education script was written by Mike Makowsky, who was a student at Roslyn High School during the events. Although it may seem slow at first, the film takes the time to get to know the characters and their roles within the school district and then slowly plunges into the sea of corruption that hides behind appearances. The direction of the film generates powerful scenes and situations of honesty that allow us to see the humane sides of those involved, regardless of how questionable their actions may be.
Hugh Jackman proves once again his ability to convey complex emotions, positioning his performance as one of the best so far this year. Other performances that stand out in the film include those of Allison Janney, whose acting skills allowed her to get lost in the character, and Ray Romano, who had not performed outstandingly in a long time until his recent appearance in The Irishman by Martin Scorsese.
